Is it me or have the BBC got this wrong
Paolo di Canio - When West Ham were awarded a spot-kick while trailing Bradford 4-2 in the Premier League in 2000, the ball was spotted by regular taker Frank Lampard only for Italian Di Canio to pull rank, re-placing the ball himself and tucking the ball away. He then continued the argument with Lampard as the pair returned to the halfway line. Joe Cole then equalised, before Lampard, rather fittingly, scored to earn a remarkable 5-4 win.

I was at the game. Wasn't this the other way round with Di Canio being our penalty taker and FF trying to take it.

Re: Is it me or have the BBC got this wrong
I was there and one of those games that sticks in the memory. Shaka did his leg and 17 or 18 year old Stephen Bywater came on and made loads of mistakes for his debut.

I think we were 2-2 at half time but fantastic come back to 5-4 after going down to 2-4 shortly after half time. One of those days I though at the time and when PDC and Lampard started arguing over the penalty I expected him to miss it but good old Paolo...

I remember seeing Harry describe it years later. I can't remember how but he made it into an incorrect but comical tale while hanging poor old Bywater out to dry...

Dean Saunders caught him as he kicked a ball rushing out I recall.
Dont think Shaka was ever quite the same after that.
For example without that he may have had a few more inches spring in his dive at Cardiff 2006

Egg, yeah just read through the thread and saw that.

Is this the match where Hislop started in goal but broke his leg in the first few minutes, hence Bywater coming on?

the game that sent Chelsea into the playoffs and relegated them!

(back when the play offs included a top flight team too)

Also kept us up unless we lost by about 8 at Newcastle which lead to Lyall naming Tom McAliister on the bench as our sub

staffs

as I said earlier, Di Canio had missed his previous penalty and told Lampard he could have the next one

Re: Is it me or have the BBC got this wrong
That's the right sequence of events but Di Canio was regular penalty taker at the time (although Lampard did occasionally take them, usually away when Di Canio wasn't there...) and Lampard tried to take it. I don't know if that was because Di Canio was wound up after being kicked up in the air and the fact we were losing to Bradford.

Whilst watching that on youtube I was drawn to another match from 1988 vs Chelsea, memorable for the ridiculously small shorts and Stewart Robson winning player of the year.

Enjoy.

I think that's why DiCanio was having a strop, constantly getting fouled in the box

Best game I've ever seen live, PDC should have had 3 pens before hand, it was anarchy!

Certainly were Woody, any team with Jonny Moncs still knocking about was fine by me

Joey Cole's first goal if I remember rightly?

I took/forced an aussie bird from work to this game as I had a spare, who had no interest in football and didn't want to be there at all.

She ended up crying with emotion at it all (cracking game after all) and is a hammer still to this day and invited me over to the Wellington friendly as that's where she now lives.

Silly bint and it was definitely Lampard's penalty.
